Few people traveling to South America or specifically to Brazil know about the diversity of the population of the country’s largest city, Sao Paulo. Called “Sampa” by its residents, the city is home to more than eleven million people. Not all of its residents are Brazilian however, as the city is also home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan, plays home to enormous communities of Italians and Arabs, as well as many other foreigners who all happily call themselves “paulistanos”.
The country of Brazil contains a large portion of the Pantanal, one the world’s largest tropical wetlands. It is a critically important environment for many plants, birds and animals. So much so that it has earned three separate designations for protective services – it is the Pantanal Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it contains the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park and the SESC Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve

The area known as the Southern region stands out from the others for several reasons.

The country of Brazil is the fifth largest on the Earth – which not many people are aware of. The country is divided up into several regions for administrative purposes, each containing states and cities within them. While some are identified by their state’s borders, other regions rely on natural, cultural or even economic borders to help distinguish them. The Northern region is defined mostly by its unique geography and native Indian peoples. Though the rest of Brazil is home to some of the most cosmopolitan and world renown cities in the world, its Northern region is best known as the home to the Amazon forest.

Most people can’t help themselves; they get into a discussion about the remarkable city of Rio de Janeiro and suddenly find themselves humming the tune to “The Girl from Ipanema”. This is because the famous beach is only one of the amazing locations that people travel from around the world to see while enjoying a visit to the city.
Brazil is such a large country that it is administrated as five separate regions, each containing states with cities, towns and villages of their own. While some regions may not be well known outside of the country, the Southeast region of Brazil is probably the most famous. It is home to the country’s strongest economic activity, but also to its most well recognized cities – Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Because the country of Brazil is the fifth largest on the planet, its government defines it by regions. There are five distinct regions in Brazil, some marked simply by the borderlines of the various states within the region, and some distinguished by cultural, geographic or economic lines. The area known as the Northeast of Brazil is defined by nine states, each remarkably different from the other.
