Most people can’t help themselves; they get into a discussion about the remarkable city of Rio de Janeiro and suddenly find themselves humming the tune to “The Girl from Ipanema”. This is because the famous beach is only one of the amazing locations that people travel from around the world to see while enjoying a visit to the city.

Divided into four districts, Rio de Janeiro is not the capital city of Brazil, but it is the second largest city in the country. It has become so well known due, in part, to its striking landscape and scenery. Most people instantly recognize the “Cristo Redentor” (Christ the Redeemer) statue that has become an icon for both Rio and Brazil, but there are so many more scenes, locations and places that make a trip to Rio de Janeiro a memorable experience.

The full time residents refer to their hometown as the “marvelous city”, and a traveler will soon discover just exactly why the citizens have come to see it this way. For example, each of the four districts of the city has a tremendous amount to offer a visitor. The Centro district is the city’s financial and professional center containing some of the most historic buildings and architecture in the city. The South Zone is the area most known for its tourists and beaches – such as Ipanema and Copacabana – as well as its upscale residences. The North Zone contains the Maracana Stadium, the National Museum and the world famous Feira Nordestina (Northeastern Fair) which is equal parts social event and cultural exchange. Finally, the West Zone is known mostly as a lovely beach spot and residential area.

Getting to know each zone could take the greater part of a traveler’s vacation time, so it is a good idea to plan ahead. For example, many visitors like to take a tram ride on the Sugar Loaf Mountain then visit the beaches they have glimpsed from above. Many tours depart directly from hotels at Ipanema and Copacabana.

In addition to its many sights, beaches, impressive buildings, and museums the city is also host to some of the finest shopping in the world. In fact, many visitors travel to Rio de Janeiro specifically to enjoy the excellent bargains and unique offerings. If shopping is not of interest, there are many parks and of course the famous “Carnival” events that draw millions of visitors to the “marvelous city” each year.
